Paul Parks posted a 9-4 triumph over AC Camara, lifting Team Atlanta to the Ones Basketball League (OBL) Championship, dubbed “For the Throne,” in a dramatic 29-28 triumph over Team Washington D.C., in front of a packed house at Oak Ridge High School and international television audience on Fubu Sports Network and YouTube on Wednesday. OBL Founder Basketball Hall of Famer Tracy McGrady was on hand along with the celebrity GM/Owners of each squad.
D.C.’s Zeke Hurst got his team off to a good start in the finals, scoring the first seven points en route to a 9-5 win over DJ Waters. Atlanta’s Malik Dunbar returned the favor, taking a 7-0 lead and holding off Zae Moore, 9-6, in the second matchup. Then, in what might have been the game of the night, Kevin “Uncle Skoob” Kuteyi went toe-to-toe with Brannon Hopkins, scoring the last four points for a 9-6 victory to put D.C. ahead, 24-20. But Parks then battled Camara, another duel of top-flite players, and, leading 7-4, swished a jumper from behind the two-point line for the event-winning shot.
Atlanta and D.C. had advanced by edging Baltimore and Miami, respectively, in the semifinals before meeting for the title. Atlanta staved off a late Baltimore rally to win by a single bucket, 20-19, while D.C. and Miami ended the semifinal tied at 21, necessitating a first-to-two-point playoff between D.C.’s Moore and Miami’s John Williams Jr., won by Moore, 2-0, to send D.C. to the final.
All four team members competed in 1v1 matchups, with the total points scored by each player determining the team winner in each round.
“This was the best of the best, and it did not disappoint,” said McGrady. “Great players make great plays, and these 16 athletes showed that one on one is the ultimate basketball test. Congratulations to Team D.C. and Team ATL for proving it on the court and to the fans for bringing the energy all night.”
The “OBL: For the Throne” team Owners and GMs on hand on Wednesday included:
• Team Atlanta: Jaylen Brown, NBA Champion
• Team Baltimore: Muggsy Bogues, 14-year NBA veteran
• Team Miami: Tim Hardaway Sr., five-time NBA All-Star
• Team Washington, D.C.: Quinn Cook, two-time NBA champion
• Team New York: Jadakiss, recording star and basketball insider (team had been eliminated but still attended).
Two of the more spirited matchups in the semifinals came back-to-back, when Zae Moore of D.C. defeated Joey Martinez of Miami, 7-5, and Paul Parks of Atlanta rallied to top Robert Fomby of Baltimore, 7-6.
