When the Rams and Chargers moved from St. Louis and San Diego, respectively, the prospect of a new, state-of-the-art facility was one of the major amenities. Now, SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, home of the legendary Forum, is in the final stages of construction.
A contingent of media got a first-hand look at the progress on Wednesday, with updates on two of the stadium’s distinguishing features, the Oculus and ETFT roof canopy.
The 70,000-square-foot Oculus, billed as the only two-sided oval center-hung video board, will weigh about 2.2 million pounds, and will boast the largest LED content playback system in use. The roof, constructed of highly-resistant plastic ethylene tetrafluoroethylene (ETFE), will total about 1 million square feet.
Opening Day is 181 days away, with a Taylor Swift concert set for July 25 as the venue’s first event.
The NFL schedule customarily comes out in April, with preseason games beginning in August. SoFi will also host Super Bowl LVI in 2022, the college football National Championship in 2023 and Olympic Games opening and closing ceremonies in 2028 among its major events.
