Watching the original Nine Innings From Ground Zero on its first broadcast in 2004 on HBO was a chilling experience, the horrors of 9/11 still raw and fresh in the minds of most Americans. For sports fans, the connection between the teams in the regions most affected by the day’s tragedies, in particular the Mets, Yankees, Giants and Jets but also others in N.Y., Boston, Washington and elsewhere, remains a part of the memory of that day in 2001.
Now, two decades later, Turner Sports has produced the follow up, Extra Innings from 9/11: 20 Years Later, set to premiere on HBO Max on Saturday, Sept. 11. former Yankees Joe Torre and Bernie Williams and former Mets Bobby Valentine, Mike Piazza, John Franco and Al Leiter will share stories of the day and its aftermath, as well as relatives of the tragic victims.
Also contributing to the production are Sandy Montag, CEO of The Montag Group, and Steve Ascher with A+E; the film is also produced and directed by Ross Greenburg and Joe Lavine.
We’ll have a review here upon screening.
