Featuring a $25,000 prize purse, OmegaBall, the revolutionary game that is reimagining the way that competitive soccer is played with three teams competing against one another on a round field, will make its San Diego debut this Friday, Dec. 13 and Saturday, Dec. 14 atop the Sports Deck at San Diego State University.
Matches will take place from 4-9 p.m. on Friday and from 9 a.m.-9 p.m. on Saturday in both men’s & women’s divisions. Admission is FREE and the public is welcome to attend. And for those not in San Diego, the semifinal and championship matches will be streamed worldwide via Triller, Lights Out and Moonball, bringing tremendous exposure to America’s Finest City.
OmegaBall is played by men and women soccer players with experience in some of the highest profile semi-professional leagues and clubs. It is played on a round field measuring 175 feet in diameter, about half the size of a traditional soccer pitch. Games are extremely fast-paced as they feature three teams of five players, three goals, no throw-ins (corner kicks only (or in OmegaBall lingo, “Edge Kicks”) and no offsides. OmegaBall uses a traditional soccer ball and games consist of three 13-minute periods with each match lasting about one hour in total.
Each team tries to score on either of the other two opponents’ goals while defending their own. The unique nature of the round field fosters the no offsides component. “Cherry Picking” is encouraged and players on teams not in possession of the ball can exploit the other attacking team, steal the ball and score at any moment. Play resumes (much like in basketball) immediately after an out-of-bounds play or a score. OmegaBall games average ten times more scoring than traditional soccer.
“We are pleasantly surprised how quickly OmegaBall has exploded onto the soccer scene with it now being played across the United States and in a number of traditional soccer countries around the world like Spain, Uruguay, Nigeria and Trinidad & Tobago,” said San Diego State Alum and OmegaBall founder Anthony Dittmann. “There are players participating at every level, from youth and club all the way up to the professional ranks. We’ve taken some of the best components of soccer and combined them into a brand-new fun, fast, high-scoring and competitive sport. The athletes really love playing this game and that has certainly contributed to its quick adoption.”
OmegaBall made its debut in March 2022 at The Great Park in Irvine, California on FS2 and in the last 30 months, it has evolved into a global phenomenon. Additionally, OmegaBall has been aired countless times on ESPN2. In the U.S., OmegaBall has partnered with a number of youth soccer organizations who now foster the sport within their existing operation.
