Topps Project 2020 is celebrating the 19th annual Roberto Clemente Day, marked across MLB today, with artist Tyson Beck‘s reimagining of the 1955 Clemente card. The piece, which posted at noon ET, is available to fans until noon ET on Friday.
Beck’s design moved several elements of the original card around, primarily converting it from a horizontal format to vertical. The head shot of Clemente remains the prominent feature, even more so as the batting stance and old-time Pirates logo are reduced in scale. Various statistics and verbiage are scattered in an active background.
As the ’55 is also Clemente’s rookie card, Beck added the flourish of the “RC” MLB logo, a modern design feature, as well as a modern Topps Logo.
Beck is one of 20 artists worldwide commissioned to recreate 20 classic baseball cards each for Topps Project 2020, which began in March. Beck’s Clemente is the 239th card in what will be a series of 400.
